Prologue

The pencil gently travelled over the paper as the young girl placed her vision in the sketchbook, the light lines depicting a scene of horses grazing in a field. Not horses exactly, not with flames dancing across their backs, the bright flames mixing with the red dawn. The girl smiled, pushing some of her own fiery hair out of her eyes to get a better look. She leant back and began on the mountains far in the distance, their faint snowcaps visible in the growing light. The peace was slightly overwhelming to her, having spent most of her childhood in the bustling Saffron City. There was a faint mewling as something crawled into her lap.

'Look, Ashie,' she said, pointing at the horses grazing ahead, 'remember when we last saw those?' The little creature flattened her long ears as she attempted to get a peek over to girl's sketchbook, her puffy tail bobbing in her friend's face. She squeaked happily at the sight of them, happy that this time they were wild.  A howl split the air, causing all the horses all to prick their ears and heads up. Grass and dirt billowed up in choking clouds behind them as they raced away from the source of the sound. Ashie let out a terrified squeak as she noticed three dim figures prowling on the edge of the valley. She tugged at the girl's vest and swiftly climbed the tree behind them.

'Wait,' whispered the girl, hurriedly packing her things away and slinging her backpack on. She scrabbled at the lower branches, heaving herself up when she finally got a grip. Ashie squeaked from above, fretting. 'I'm coming,' muttered the girl, carefully climbing the branches to her friend.

'That's it,' she panted as she reached the high branch, 'next time, we're taking the road.' Muffled shouts brought back her attention. She stood up, gripping the trunk for support, searching for the source of the noise. A foal, too slow for her pursuers, was surrounded by men and dogs. It sent up frightened cries as one of the dogs leapt towards it. The was a thunderous neigh as the foal's mother charged at it's attackers, unleashing jets of fire at the dogs that made them whine with pain. One of the men shouted something and all the remaining dogs leapt at the mother, all trying to bite her neck.

This was too much for the girl. She leapt out of her tree, ignoring the protests of the small creature bouncing after her. 'Stop!' she yelled the men, 'what do you think you're doing?'

They all looked incredulously at her, was she really that stupid to stand up to them? No, surely not. With guffaws of laughter the men adjusted their nets, throwing them over the flailing foal. The sun continued to rise above the glittering mountains, its shining face oblivious to the worries of the world. There were snarls as the dogs were instructed to rush the mare.

'No!' screamed the girl, pounding on.

'Whatcha gonna do, girlie?' taunted one of the attackers, 'that furball gonna maul us?'

Shaking with laughter, the men let her race up to them.

Ignoring the snarling dogs and staring eyes , the pair sprinted up to the mare. Kneeling next to the body, the girl ran her fingers along the bloody gash along the neck. It was a horrible thing, stretching from jaw to wither, a huge gaping crater. The mare was going to die. The girl was amazed that anyone could do such a thing.

'You have no right to do this!' she yelled at the men surrounding her. Their amusement died, scowls appearing on their faces. One of them reached out and grabbed the girl by the vest.

'Look, little trainer,' he growled 'it ain't your place to be sayin' anythin' 'bout what we do.' He shook her for emphasis. She stared at him for a moment, a sweeping fear threatening to swallow her up. There was a crunching noise, the man screamed and let go of the girl. The man's foot began swiping the air as he tried to dislodge the little creature latched there.

'Good girl, Ashelin!' the girl cried, throwing the nets off the screaming foal. She glanced at the larger horse, a sharp sorrow went through her. The mare's eyes were glassy, she was dead. Shouts rang through the morning as the men attempted to prise off Ashie, still hanging off the man's leg.

'How do we get out of here?' whispered the girl to the foal. The foal neighed and bent its legs slightly, offering its back.

'How-?' the girl wondered aloud, gingerly touching the flames. They don't burn, she realised, as a cool sensation bathed her fingers. A roar behind them caused her to spin round; it was the man that grabbed her earlier, holding a bundle of fur in his fist. The rest of his friends surged behind him, fury on their faces.

'Not so cocky now 'eh?' he hissed, stepping forward.

'Now, Ashie!' cried the girl, leaping onto the foal's back. The man let out a squeal as Ashie nipped his hand. The girl scooped her up, crying 'Yah!'

The foal sprinted off into the forest, desperate to escape and protect her saviour. The trees became more and more dense, the men's voices becoming less and less audible. The foal dodged between the darkened trunks, lightly skipping over many a twisted root. The girl was becoming worried that she would mis-step and all their efforts would be for nothing. But she was getting confused. Where were they going? She wasn't steering and Ashie, stuck in between her body and the foal's neck, definitely wasn't having any affect on where they were heading.

A shrill shrieking in the trees made her apprehensive.

'Excuse me,' she asked the foal, feeling rather stupid as she did so, 'but where are we going.'

Safety

The word reverberated in her mind, what?

'Did you say anything?' Now she felt extremely stupid.

Safety

'Ok,' the girl muttered, 'I'm losing it.'

The foal suddenly quickened her pace, charging through the trees. All the the girl and friend could do was cling on. A flock of birds, startled from sleep, rushing into the sky with a racing of wings. The sound of gurgling water caught the girl's attention.

'Water, stream, river? Is that where we're going?' The gurgling turned into a whooshing noise.

The sight that met her eyes was all she needed.

The foal had brought them to a large clearing. Pecha and Cheri berry trees ringed the edge of the long grass, while monkey creatures with hands on their tails played in them. A river curved through it, coming from a small lake right in the middle. A small waterfall gushed its contents over the worn rocks, suppling all the animals that lived here with fresh water. But this didn't catch the girl's attention most. A huge statue, depicting every last species of animal in her world surrounding a young man. He was holding something in his hands, but it was too far away too make out. The foal neighed.

Sanctuary, safe here

The girl slid off the foal's back, slightly in awe. Ashie fell with a muffled thump onto the soft grass.

'This place is amazing,' she whispered.

Silver speak

'What?'

A large creature sat near the top of the waterfall, watching her with his navy-rimmed eyes. He stretched his large, shining arms gracefully, moving the fingers at the end. All the other animals fell silent, watching. The creature focused one of his deep blue eyes on the young girl.

Your family must bring him here. The words, unlike that of the foals, were clear, and powerful.

'Who?' asked the girl. The creature simply studied her.

Him

'Him?' she repeated, pointing at the statue.

Yes

This was all very strange, but something niggled at the girl the most.

'My family?'

Yes

'But,' she was confused, 'why not me?'

Not your time

'Not my...' she trailed off, wonder rendering her speechless.

He will come, and when he does, the ancient enemy will fight us at last

The girl became very frightened. 'Enemy?'

The creature did not speak. The girl noticed that the clearing had a dreary mood to it suddenly, like a dark blanket draped over the happiness.

Finally, The enemy have fought the universe for thousands of years, and soon, it will be our turn, when he arrives

'When?'

Soon, he simply replied, soon.
This is now finished! It's for the fanfic contest. =)
